The death has occurred of William (Willie) Hayes, Lisheen, Carraig Hill, Roscrea, Tipperary. In his 94th year, peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family.

Tipperary has lost one of its finest historians and authors with the passing of Willie Hayes.
He had a wealth of knowledge born from his passion for local history
He enjoyed nothing more than sharing all he knew through his many books and in the inspiring talks he gave across the county.
As a boy growing up in Holycross, I was influenced by his commitment and ability to gather people around to deliver local projects.
It was Willie’s spark of genius that inspired and initiated the restoration of our cherished Abbey. The magnificent Holycross Abbey is one of Ireland’s best-known places of worship.
He also willingly gave his expertise and leadership to conservation projects including the old graveyard in Kilboy. The Church ruins in Templemore Town Park. The Castle Tower Roscrea and the layout of the beautiful garden at the rear of Roscrea Castle.
Willie was gifted in many ways. He was blessed with a lovely personality. Gentle, softly spoken, respectful and kind-hearted
Every moment of his life from beginning to end was marked by his deep and abiding spirituality.
We welcome him home to his final resting place beside his beloved Abbey, in the midst of many endearing parishioners who hold wonderful memories of a great friend.
Willie will be missed by many people, but the greatest loss will be felt by his beloved wife Mรกirรญn who brought such happiness to his life, along with his son Brendan, his brother Denis, and his extended family. I extend my sincere sympathy to each of them at this time and in the weeks and months that lie ahead.
