Today, September 29th is Michaelmas Day, holy day of St. Michael the Archangel and traditionally a harvest festival of great celebration. The monks of Holycross Abbey honoured St. Michael in a special way. From medieval times, Michaelmas Day was observed as a very special feast day in the monastic parish and is still observed as the parish patron day.
Pictures below show Mass being celebrated for Michaelmas Day in Holycross Abbey in 1972 and a Michaelmas Day Procession from 1973 with C. Cahill & P. Tomkins carrying the banner. Also shown is a newspaper clipping describing Michaelmas Day in 1914 in Holycross.
